FAQs

Will FMChecker retrieve lost passwords?
No, if a file is password protected you need a master password to see any information about it. We do not circumvent file protection.

After using the MetadataMagic File Reference Fixer, File References are not shown anymore with FMChecker.
This applies for users of MetadataMagic File Reference Fixer only (including version 2.0.1 as of this writing, May 29, 2004). If this applies to you, please read more about this issue.

Is there a way to print or save the output of FMChecker?
Currently not. This is on our To-do list.

Will FMChecker work on files that have been modified with the FM Developer Tool?
Yes, under these conditions:
1) The ability to modify has not been stripped
and
2) The file has no passwords defined
or
3) You can supply a password that grants full access to the file
Note: Stripping the ability to modify also removes any passwords that grant full access. In this case the file will not be read.

Is FMChecker available on CD?
FMChecker is available as download only.

Does FMChecker alter FileMaker Pro files in any way?
No, files are read from disk or a network volume only. Nothing is written back.

FMChecker's information differ from what I see in FileMaker Pro when the file is open! Is this a bug?
No bug. Depending on what FileMaker Pro has cached in memory, the information FMChecker reads from disk may not be up to date. Our tests in a single user environment showed, that simply doing nothing with your computer for several seconds, or switching to an other application flushes the cache. Then you get the correct results.

My file cannot be read, what can I do?
- Check whether the file is password protected. You need a password that grants full access to the file.
- Runtime files where the ability to modify has been stripped can not be read.
- The file may be corrupted or contain unknown stuff. Try to recover the file first. If it still fails, please contact us to investigate a clone of your file and possibly update FMChecker in that respect.

Do you have plans to support FileMaker Pro 7?
"We never comment on any unannounced products."

Known Issues

Program status
We are aware of the fact, that Layouts are currently not implemented. But the idea is, better to deliver something useful now than something perfect to late. Stay tuned for news and updates. Register for the FMChecker News.

Dragging of files open by FileMaker Server on Windows 2000 Server
may not be opened concurrently by FMChecker.

Speed optimization and window redraws on Mac OS 9
FMChecker is not speed optimized for OS 9. Especially on slow machines repeated and unnecessary redrawing of a window's content may appear to be annoying. We hope this problem will be solved when a new version of the underlying framework becomes available.

Scroll wheels
are currently not supported.

Scripts containing both import and export steps
Only either the import or the export order of fields is listed, not both.
